When you’re deciding whether to live in Mallorca, making sure your children’s education and quality of life are as good as they can be is vital. But how do you know how to choose the right Mallorcan school or college?

Depending on your situation, you have a choice between educating your children in the Mallorcan state system or in one of the international schools. Both options have their pros and cons.

State schools in Mallorca

Standards in the state system are high and, if you want your children to be integrated into Mallorcan life as soon as possible, a Mallorcan state education has obvious advantages.

But, it’s important to remember that all Mallorcan children in the state system have to learn Catalan and this can be difficult, even for children from other parts of Spain.

Private schools and colleges in Mallorca

One of the major reasons British people think about relocating abroad is the problems faced by the British education system. A private education is a good way to guarantee smaller classes, a more intensively focused education, better facilities and so on.

The good news is that fees for private education in Mallorca are considerably cheaper than the UK. You should expect to pay around €500 a month for a child of primary school age, rising to about €1000 in the sixth form.

As with everything to do with relocation, word of mouth is usually the best recommendation. But, if you don’t know anyone in Mallorca that can be difficult.

Start by looking for the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) accreditation. Make sure the school doesn’t just follow the British curriculum but also follows the same methods of teaching.

If you want your children to integrate, pick a school which teaches both the English and Spanish systems.

You should begin by visiting the school and interviewing the headmaster or mistress, as well as any other teachers who might be particularly important for your children’s education.
